Hi everyone,

I was just looking for some advice..My h2b and I would like to get married somewhere in crete and have been looking at some of the legal guidelines etc.

I would just like to know if any of you are booking through a tour operator or booking hol and then using wedding planner?

How long do you have to stay in crete? and does this vary with wedding planner/tour operator?

Can anyone one reccomend a nice hotel that is suitable for two kids under 5?

To be honest I feel like i'm going round in circles and hope that some of you will be able to help.

Thanks in advance,

Lou x

Hi Loulou, How exciting!  Have you been to Crete before?  We went to Elounda a few years ago & it was lovely, we stayed in a basic SC place though so can't reccomend a hotel.  Have a look at this website it may help you, I've seen this company on Wedding TV & they seem good either way it way give you an idea http://www.planetweddings.co.uk/greece_crete.html We are getting married in Lindos this Sept can't wait, it's been booked since Feb 11 - I don't know if the legal requirements are the same for Rhodes as Crete so I won't say what we have to do as don't want to confuse.  However it's not the planner or tour operator that make the rules, it's the rules of the country that dictate how long you have to be there etc. We have booked our wedding through a local wedding planner who know the wedding business & they are brillant, they have been over to the UK to meet us & had a meeting to discuss all our requirements on what we wanted & to sort our reception venue out etc.  We know the place pretty well as we have been there loads of times so pretty much knew what we wanted but the meeting has been invaluable.  We looked into booking it all with a tour operator & to be honest they were pretty usless with info & had really ridged set packages & to be honest we felt we wouldn't trust them.  It might cost you a little more to use a wedding planner but i'd reccomend it - it's their business they know what they are doing, just book the holiday with a tour opertor thats their business. Hope you get sorted soon. Fawny

Hi Fawny,

Thank you for replying.  Congratulations on your wedding in sept!  We looked at lindos too and it looks beautiful.  Haven't been to crete or anywhere in greece before but greece and all of the islands look like a lovely setting for a wedding.  Drawn to crete though, dont ask me why...

Thank you for the link to planet weddings, I will have a look tonight for some inspiration.  We are planning a very small wedding abroad so it will just be myself, my h2b and 3 kids.  We will have a meal/reception for family when we are back.

Can I ask, with your wedding dress did you pick the one you wanted or did you pick one based on the fact that you are travelling with it?

Best wishes on your wedding

We're using Ruth at Sun and Snow Weddings - she's local on Crete and always quick to answer. We're getting married near Hersonnissos next to a chapel near the sea.   Ruth is doing all the paperwork for us so there's no worries.  x

Hi ruby2012,

Thank you for replying.  Congratulations on your wedding, its an exciting time!  I have looked at sun and snow weddings because I have heard they are really good.  Have you been to crete before? And have you visited the place you have chosen to get married?

When you first spoke to sun and snow weddings did you ask for prices and what could be tailor made for you?  Are they reasonably priced?  It all seems quite daunting...

How long do you have to stay in crete before you get married?  And is there a minmum residency ie 14 nights?

Sorry for all the questions

Hi,

We choose the venue as we've been to Crete before.  Ruth tailors everything for you exactly so you only pay for what you want.  It's not the cheapest option but by far the best we'd looked at.  There isn't a minimum residency, we're arriving 3 days before the wedding.

Hi,

Dress wise I have choosen the one I want but out of a destination range.  Having been to Lindos many times before in Sept I know the temps are still in the late 30's early 40's so I knew I could not have a traditional dress as I would in the UK.  I'm having my dress made but it's a mixture of a few of the Maggie Soretto destination dresses that are much lighter for the heat & also as you say for having to carry it abroad with the weight restrictions.

All the best

Fawny

Hi hun,

we are getting married in crete august 2013 and using Ruth at sun and snow weddings as well she is fab

in terms of timescales the tour operators tell you you have to be out there for 7/8 days before as it is to make money.

looking at the greek consulate/embassy page and email them for info on it - i did and they were very helpful

ruth is fab and taking over all the paperwork on her side we just have to do our bit here (birth certificates/no impediments copies apostile stamped and sent to her with copies of the passport etc etc)

cannot recommend her highly enough - she even detoured to come and meet us in the snow in birmingham!

we are having the ceremony on analipsi beach down the road from hersonissos and then reception at a local taverna

we are booking our hotel, flights and transfers directly with the company as they will freeze the price at this years instead of paying out extra to the middle man at the tour operator.

Hi himsher,

Congrats on your forthcoming wedding.  Thanks for all the info.  I have been in contact with the greek embassy as i felt like was just going round in circles, was good to get some clarity.  Glad you dont have to be out there for a week before hand as I have two kids under 5 and think they wouldn't be able to manage two weeks.  Sounds like sun and snow weddings offer a range of venues for your wedding, we would really like a beach ceremony also.  Haven't seen any bad comments about sun and snow weddings so think will definately be using them also.  I didn't know you that you were able to book hotel, flights and transfers through them though.
