Last week proposals to allow civil partnerships to take place in religious settings were unveiled by the Coalition Government Churches would not be forced to offer same sex ceremonies and the plans were welcomed by campaigners and politicians, including former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who claimed that they were long overdue. This is not a proposal that will find favour with the Roman Catholic Church, with Pope Benedict XVI describing gay marriage as "insidious". However, others faiths, such as Quakers and Liberal Jews and Unitarians seem supportive of the move. But will this ruling really make a difference to same sex marriages?
