H2B and I are trying to decide what to do for our honeymoon. We have from Saturday 28th May until Wednesday 1st June next year child-free, which is obviously not a long time, but we haven't had any holiday together since 2005 and we want to make the most of it.

In 2005 we went to Egypt (Cairo and Sharm el Sheik) and absolutely loved it. We went to the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum and a lot of the other cultural sites around the area. We always said that we would love to go back and see the other end of Egypt - mainly Luxor and the Valley of the Kings.

I've been looking online and we can go away on exactly the days we need (Sat - Wed), stay in a luxury 5* hotel on the Nile and it's around £600 each. Brilliant! But then we got to thinking - if we do go to Luxor for our honeymoon it will be amazing, but not relaxing at all! The flight leaves at 9.15am on the Saturday from Heathrow and we'd have to get there 2 hours before, and we live 2 hours away from Heathrow as well! Then we'd have a day of flights and travelling, 3 days of activities (going to see the temples, valley, museum etc), then the flight home leaves at 7.20am on the Wednesday! So it will be quite a tiring break.

So the question is - do we take the opportunity to go and see the sights that we would love to see, but get back probably more tired then when we left, or do we just book a nice relaxing pool holiday somewhere else?

Sorry it's such a long question!

Have a relaxing honeymoon!  You can always do a couple of day trips out and see the sights, just so your not trying to do too much?

I'm a bit worried about the travelling for ours.  Haven't booked it yet but going to do a multi-centre thing in America - Hawaii, Las Vegas, Mexico, New York (18 days in total).  I am planning on doing absolutely nothing in Hawaii and Mexico!!

We are doing both really, 7night safari - lots of travelling, followed by 7 (may increase to 10 depending on work etc) night beach holiday to do nothing but lie on beach and cocktails in the water :)

its a once in a lifetime holiday for us, we never ever go away for longer than a week so we are making most of this one :)

Do you know who you're booking it with? That sounds the kind of thing we'd like

Tough call, it's a time when you are going to splash out on a treat of a holiday and it would be a shame to waste a chance to go and see and do things you wouldn't normally have the chance to do.. However!! By the time your wedding comes around you will be soooooo looking forward to some relaxation!

I have not been stressed about the wedding up til now (7 weeks and 2 days to go) and there is so much to do in the next few weeks that you can't really do in advance, that I am just looking forwrad to all inclusive, chill out holiday! We have booked a hotel with lots of water sports and a spa, just in case we decide to do anything!

were going more for acticity by going to whistler in january - follows on from our winter wedding
apart from skiiing/boarding we can go to the spa in the hotel to relax and go on husky rides, snomobiling etc

if we wanted a relaxing beach holiday it doesnt have to be anywhere far from home because to me lying on a beach is lying on a beach - but if i'm spening a lot to go further a field then i wasnt to explore the place and see different parts of the world

a combination of both sounds good - it would be a shame to go someone where and lay on a sunlouger all day every day

good luck

We are going on a watersports honeymoon- too much 'relaxing' will just tire us out and be boring!!

So it depends what sort of people you are!!!

It's so difficult to know what to do for your honeymoon. We are thinking of going to Madagascar, but too expensive at the moment, so trying to budget.

Check out the Honeymoon blogs for more ideas.

Thanks everyone, your honeymoons all sound amazing. Very jealous of the safari! Although I think the winter sports one wouldn't quite be for me - I can barely stand up on two feet on a flat surface, so sticking boards to my feet and setting me off down a slippery mountain would only equal a lot of broken bones!

If we had a little bit longer (even just a week!) then I would have no problem going to Luxor - we could do a couple of days sightseeing then spend the rest of the time by the pool. But because we would only have 3 full days there it just means we'll have to spend the entire time seeing everything we want to.

Hmm, decisions decisions! H2B wants to go, he says if we have to sacrifice a bit of relaxation in order to go somewhere we've always wanted then that's what we should do. I do agree with him, but it would be lovely to relax a little bit as well! Perhaps I should just book myself a spa day for when we get back!

Relaxing. I don't do activity :P

In a perfect world, we want to go to Bora Bora, but it's so expensive and such a long way. I say no activity, but I love to snorkel and SCUBA dive, so maybe a little activity!

Hopefully by then we will also be TTC, so it would be nice to relax pre baby :P

Hi amystev,

Have you had a good look around for different prices for Egypt?  About £600 each for not even a week sounds quite expensive.  Me and H2B are off to Egypt for 2 weeks for our honeymoon and it is costing £1800.  That is for flight to Sharm, 11 nights in Sharm all inclusive, flight to Cairo, 3 nights in Cairo half board and flight home from Cairo.

Is your price through a travel agent?

I went away last week lay by the pool for a week and it was great but for our honeymoon no way!! - we toyed with the idea of maldives etc but i know 2 weeks there would drive me crazy and it is too far to go for a week!

We love city breaks - we are returning to new york for ours as we know once kids come along we won't stand a chance of going somewhere like that and a beach holiday to europe is far more likely (although realise it won't be very relaxing!)

To us a honeymoon is a 'lifetime' experience - something that you have always wanted to do - so what you will be shattered but you will have an amazing time in Egypt - go with what your gut says not what you 'think' you should do - i have had people say to me 'but don't you want to just lie on a beach for a week' - personally no I don't!

Thanks all, totally agree with you MrsFtobe - it is a lifetime experience!

So we've decided on Egypt and we just have to decide whether to leave the evening do slightly early (around 10pm) then get an airport taxi up to Heathrow that night, or whether to get up very early in the morning and go around 5am. We'll be tired but it will be amazing! Plus the fact that it's the last holiday with just the two of us we'll have for years, it'll be Butlins with the kids for the forseeable future!!

The £600 is for a ridiculously expensive 5* hotel MrsR2B, we could go for around £400 each but we thought why not splash out on a little luxury! It's got an infinity pool out over the Nile, and the room we can choose has a huge balcony that wraps around the corner of the hotel and looks out over the Nile as well. It looks incredible! Might still go for the less expensive options, but we'll see. We went on exactly the same holiday as you are having and it was incredible, we loved every minute of it.

We're looking at the package with Virgin Holidays.  It looks amazing!  Haven't got a price yet but we're going to book it in August I think when we get back from visiting the in-laws in Germany

We got married on the 13th June and went to Florida for 10 days on the 15th. We did 8 theme parks in that time and, on the other couple of days, we tried to do nothing but ended up wanting to go and do something exciting. We found going out for meals in the evening, swimming in the pool up to 11pm when we got in from a long day, mini golf and the odd bit of shopping relaxing enough.

I say a bit of both i think.

My idea of he*l for a honeymoon is the Maldives stuck on an Island with just water and fish, far to relaxed for me!!

I like relaxation but still like doing activities and going out clubbing!!
Beach and few drinks , go snorkling and scubadiving and have fun at night time

Definately activity packed! We went to Maldives in 2008 and we both got bored so were going to Florida/Disney/a bunch of theme parks for 2 weeks! Gonna be ace! Laughing

H2B and I are having a totally chilled-out long weekend just after the wedding as this has been quite an eventful few months and not all in a good way with my mother being taken into hospital, a family bereavement and the more practical issues involved in merging two households and H2B trying to get his flat sold/let out. We're having a couple of nights "up north" (well, further north than our home in Central Scotland) then going for another couple of nights to a lovely hotel in a lighthouse in SW Scotland. I'm on a Fixed-Term Contract which ends in November so we'll probably try to catch a few days in London and maybe nip over on the Eurostar to Paris for a "proper" honeymoon then. H2B is planning not to take his mobile and I'd love to do the same but I'll have to take mine with me.

We'd both die of boredom on a beach yet all the wedding magazines seem to assume all couples want to lounge by a tropical pool. We were booked originally to go to Prague but cancelled, first of all due to the volcanic ash and then by parent-related issues. We've also toyed with Berlin and Amsterdam - they're all on our To Visit list.
